PURGING OF HOCKEY
ROUGH PLAY INQUIRY ASSOCIATION’S ACTIVITIES It is confidently expected that next Saturday will not see a repetition of tho wild hockey displayed last week in the senior grade. Not only in the much-talked-of Somerville-Areta battle, but also in a B section match, a good deal of body work and generally rough and questionable play was in evidence. In the lower division game no gross exhibitions were seen by the referee, and no players were ordered to the side-line. Referee A. Williams, who controlled tho Somerville-Areta game, is to be commended on his firm action in sending the two offenders from the field, and thus suppressing bad sportsmanship early in the season. The lesson of this match will, no doubt, be taken to heart by other players given to indiscreet tactics, and for the remainder of the season clean hockey should be the rule. * * * Reprimand For Rough Play The case of the two hockey players, R. Savage and L. Carter, of Areta, who were ordered to leave the field during the match with Somerville on Saturday came up for consideration at a meeting of the executive committee of the Auckland Hockey Association last evening. Savage, who is at present away on a boat, was alleged to have used his weight to the danger of other players. He is to be suspended until a letter of explanation is forthcoming. Carter struck a player who had fallen. He was severely cautioned, and is to be allowed to play on his assurance that the offence would not recur. * * * Problem of New Grounds As a practical step toward finding playing grounds for next year, when the association expects no longer to have the use of the Remuera Reserve, a sub-committee was set up to inspect possible accommodation. Alive to the possibility of securing a portion of the Morningside Reserve the association made application to the Mount Albert Borough Council. It was decided to inform the association that due consideration would be given to its request when the areas were formed. Contributions toward the cost of construction of the new grounds are solicited by the council. Waikato Is Ambitious Evidently believing that the Auckland Hockey Association has too extensive a tract of territory under its control the Waikato Hockey Association has made bold to suggest that a large area of Auckland’s country should be transferred to come under the jurisdiction of the Hamilton authorities. It was considered that a more equitable distribution of the province would result if Waikato were to take over the Waipa, Cambridge, Rotorua, Te Awamutu, Maniapoto and other districts. Fearing to lose a powerful part of its territory the association has lost no time in forwarding a strong protest against -Hamilton’s scheme to Mr. P. N. Quartermain, its representative on the governing body in Christchurch. * * * Goalies Out Of Action B. Cooper, custodian for Somerville Seniors, who fractured and dislocated his right ankle in the first match of the season, is going about with his leg in plaster.
It is certain he will not be able to play again this season, but he hopes later on to assist the game by refereeing. His injury was self-in-flicted. Always a lusty kicker, he “booted” the turf instead of the ball in repulsing a Varsity attack. Another goalkeeper to be put out of action was
D. Wilkie, of Areta, who, last Saturday, severely strained a ligament in rushing out to meet a Somerville forward about to score. It is understood Wilkie does not so much mine his injury as the fact that the attack he tried to smother was successful when Clive Watts goaled.
