LOCAL CONGESTION ONE TREE HILL TROUBLES A SUGGESTED SOLUTION Those players who have taken part in coYnpetitions at One Tree Hill this season will recollect their ventures with little pleasure. There has been no decided tendency to get away early, the noon hour being slack, and after that there has been congestion. An attempt was made last Saturday to get over the banking-up on the third tee by so arranging the order of playing the holes that the third was fifth, but the results were negligible, and there was the usual long and tiring wait. The trouble about this third hole is that it is by no means a straightforward proposition. There is far too much long grass of a particularly objectionable species, and the wait on the tee results in 75 per cent- of duffed tee shots. Instead of being a oneshot hole it is invariably a two-shot, the players still being within range playing their thirds. The following hole is little better. While this sort of thing is passable on an ordinary day it is disastrous on a crowded competition day, and I suggest that a great deal of the difficulty would completely disappear if the order of holes were the same as they were last Saturday, but the third hole was converted into a really short hole, and the fourth was played for the ladies’ tee. For competition purposes a temporary tee could be pegged past the second green, so that the third became a mashie shot, and the bogey, three. I believe that if this suggestion were put into operation there would be none of the present dreary delay, and a little education in the direction of warning some members that they were not out on an afternoon’s ramble with the course to themselves, would make One Tree Hill competitions a whole lot more enjoyable—and the scoring probably a whole lot better.
