TAPIRS FOR ZOO DIE ON VOYAGE
WEATHER TOO COLD j OTHER ANIMALS QUITE WELL Two tapirs which left Singapore by the Sussex died on the voyage. They were intended for the Auckland Zoo, but evidently they could not bear the cold weather. It was stated this morning that one of the animals was ill before it left Singapore. When the Sussex encountered qold and stormy weather on her way down the Queensland coast, the animals both succumbed. The tapir is an ungainly animal, and one of the oldest existing types of mammals. It has four toes on the front feet, and three on the back. The nose and upper lip are united to form a short movable trunk. Another addition to the zoo brought by the Sussex is an anoa. a species of tiny wild ox. It was also obtained at Singapore. This animal arrived in the best of health. Four tiny monkeys brought by the Sussex will go to the Jubilee Minstrels at Dunedin. Two others died on the way out.
