WANGANUI TRIALS

BRILLIANT JUMPING LIMITED AND COVENT GARDEN GALLOP FAST (Special to THE SUN) WANGANUI, Tuesday. After several showers during the night the weather proved mild and clear for training operations this morning. Quite a large gallery attended to witness some fine jumping displays. With the majority of visiting steeplechasers and hurdlers on the scene it was anticipated that most of them would be schooled over the brush or battens this morning, and such proved to be the case. Of those seen out perhaps the btjst displays were afforded by Aberfeldy among the hurdlers and Tuki and Brigadier Bill among the leppers- The track is in splendid condition for Thursday. Just So was stepped out over three furlongs, Kiosk’s half-sister, wide out and with a light-weight up, covered in 39. She is engaged at Otaki. One for the Sprint King Mart (Barry) and Co vent Garden (light-weight) were associated over five furlongs, which distance the latter covered in 1.4 2-5, the first furlong taking 12 4-5 and the first quarter 24 1-5. King Mart could not foot it with his companion over the concluding stages, and was a couple of lengths in the rear when the post was reached, but as it was a satisfactory display on the part of Covent Garden it must be regarded as an equally good showing by King Mart. Covent Garden would add to his friends for the Borough Handicap engagement. Royal Elm covered five furlongs in 1.4 2-5, the last three taking 40 2-5. A Smart Youngster Consent, Curtain and Cold Air (the last-named a Warplane gelding in L. Knapp’s Awapuni stable, engaged in the Purua Hack) were partnered in a flutter over four furlongs’ task The first-named revelled in it to cover the distance in 50, the last three taking 38. Curtain was not pressed, as she is not so forward as the other pair. Glenross and Avro were companions over six furlongs, finishing practically on terms in 1.17 2-5. They covered the

first furlong in 12 2-5, the next in 12 4-5, three in 37 2-5, and the half-mile in 50 1-5. Both pleased by the manner in which they hit out, and the former retained his hold on public favour for the Connolly Handicap. A Slick Five Limited slipped along fast over five furlongs, the last four of which he covered in 50 3-5, taking just under 39 for the last three and 1.2 for the whole journey. He is a speedy customer and may be expected to run well in the Borough Handicap, in which L. G. Morris will have the mount. Moa Bird was given a couple of rounds at half pace. She looks well, and will be ridden in the Borough Handicap by H. Wiggens. Maunga, looking well, was seen doing three-quarter pace over a couple of circuits. Among the Jumpers The first to make an appearance over the obstacles were Teucer and Harrowgate. The pair cleared five flights of hurdles satisfactorily. Brigadier Bill (Alan McDonald) and Ruby Ring (Alister McDonald) were associated in a bout over the big country, both jumping six fences in good style. The former cleared the obstacles with ease, and as the brush fences in the Wanganui Steeplechase are no stiffer than those experienced in schooling, many will want to be with the Brigadier on Thursday. On the firmer ground at Wanganui Ruby Ring will be more at home than he was at the Egmont meeting, in which case he may show up in the Hack Steeplechase. Tuki Fences Nicely Tuki (F. Corlett) and Risk were paired over six fences, and the former m particular pleased by the manner in which the obstacles were negotiated. A couple of times Risk got in rather close, but jumped cleanly. Aberfeldy (I. Tilson) and Wenday gave a good exhibition of fast, clean jumping over the battens, clearing six obstacles in practically faultless style save that the last was rapped. Aberfeldy m particular pleased, and he ap-

pears in great nick for his May Hurdles and Century Hurdles engagement. Vanninia (P. McGuire) was sent over four of the big obstacles, and jumped them cleanly, though with a great deal of exertion. Puwhero covered a round outside the steeplechase course, after clearing the hencoop and brush satisfactorily. He will run in the Grandstand Steeples the second das'. COMICAL AT HIS BEST Comical <E. Rae) and Mixed Heather (N. C. Trillo) went once round over the big jumps, and this time the former did everything asked of him, for he was ridden at his fences, a style that agrees with him perhaps. A change of riders will put a different complexion on his chances when next he steps out 'over country. Mixed Heather also gave a creditable display. Peneus and Red Fuchsia had little between them in merit when they jumped five flights of hurdles, and then worked on the flat. Red Fuchsia is not engaged on the first day. POURI PLEASES Fast jumping was a feature of thft early stages of the display over six flights of hurdles by Pouri (E. Warner) and Ned Kelly (A. Gilmer), though the latter ran down the first fence a little and interfered with Pouri. Toward the end the pace slackened somewhat, but the pair finished together in pleasing style. Peter Maxwell (E. Warner) and Geyserland (A. McDonald) pleased the

touts in a bout over six fences, both jumping well. Peter Maxwell looks in good condition and may be expected to improve fast. After jumping, the northerner was given a round on the flat. Shining Armour (F. Corlett) was given another schooling task over tl\e battens, and gave an improved display, though he still shows a tendency to run down his fences. He should soon show greater improvement. MISTER GAMP AGAIN A trio that gave a good display over hurdles consisted of Mister Gamp (A. McDonald), Perle de Leon (F. Corlett), and Ballyfarnon (N - . Stratton). The last-named was slightly in the rear over the initial stages, but the leaders waited for him after a circuit and they cleared the last two hurdles together. Mister Gamp pleasing most; but Perle de Leon also gave a fine display. Others to be seen over obstacles were Glengariff, who jumped the hurdles without giving satisfaction, and Son o’ Mine and Haeremai, who jumped the country, the former pleas ing most. Latest arrivals are Dick, Freeze Out Day Guard, Bright Comet, Kawhakina,' Greenacre, Royal Damon, Matu, Lady Passenger, Ring Boy, Modern, Black Mint, Royal Game, Vesperus, and several others.
