ACCLIMATISATION AFFAIRS

MEETING AT TE AROHA The Auckland Acclimatisation Society held its quarterly meeting at Te Aroha, when Mr. F. E. Mackenzie, president, presided. Many outside societies were represented. The president stated that a sum of £IOO had been voted as rewards for hawks’ feet. The financial statement showed that there was a credit bank balance of £637 3s. A sum of £34 11s 9d had been paid for pairs of hawks’ feet. Game licences issued by post offices brought in a total of £722 and cash received from agents for licences was £159, making a licence total of £ 881. The following honorary’ rangers were appointed:—Thames, Mr. H. J. Bethman; Te Awamutu, Mr. J. Latour; Wharepunga, Mr. J. Reid; Ngaruawahia. Mr. A. Payne. In order that experiments might be made in breeding partridges, it was decided to grant three brace of partridges to each of the following:—J. Dobson (Pokeno), E. V. Rickett (Cambridge), and A. Dobson (Pokeno). If the experiment is successful the society will receive an equal number of birds back and will have the advantage of having assisted in a valuable experiment.

NORTHCOTE BOROUGH

COUNCIL DELIBERATIONS The Mayor of Northcote, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, reported at the council meeting last evening that he had attended a meeting of local body representatives in conference with the Finance Committees of the Auckland City Council regarding the provision of funds for the upkeep of the Auckland Institute and Museum. The town clerk of Auckland said that borough councils and town boards had full legal authority to contribute to this proposition, under the Municipal Corporation Act out of the ordinary funds, but that road boards were confined to payments out of the unauthorised funds. It was resolved that legislation be sought to place all local bodies on the same footing. The Mayor's report was adopted. It was decided to apply to the Government for a subsidy of £IOO for improvements on the public domain, situated at Northcote Point.. The new college erected on the Roman Catholic endowment for Maori boys, will be opened early in June, an d the council when considering this years estimates, will make provision for grading and remetalling the road leading to this property. The contribution of *£2s from the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association toward the unemployment of returned soldiers in the borough, will be subsidised £1 for £l.

In response to a request from the Takapuna Borough Council to attend a conference of local bodies using the water from Lake Pupuke to obtain power to enable the North Shore Borough Water Board to strike a rate to compensate the Takapuna Council for lost rates, due to reduction in value of lands adjoining Lake Pupuke it was decided to attend the conference and to resist the proposal.

TAURANGA INTERESTS

The past year has been a successful one for the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce. At the annual meeting on Monday the following officers were electedPresident, Mr. G. T. Wright; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs. W. T. Tease and E. A. Entwistle; secretary’, Mr. A. C. Robbins; committee, Messrs. F. N. Christian, J. G. Green, A. P. Andrews, R. Rutter, W. S. Harris, R. Mann and W. H. Gifford. The secretary reported a membership of 70, and the balance sheet disclosed a credit balance of £l2 Is sd. The following resolution was passed: “Seeing that the East Coast railway, so far as it is opened, has fully justified its existence, this chamber is of the opinion that the construction of the line to Opotiki should be pushed on with all speed. As the line has been authorised and the route surveyed, we see no reason why the work should be delayed. Therefore, this chamber urges the Government to proceed with this most important work..” * • * Canon H. K. Archdale, of Auckland, was entertained at a social by the King’s College Old Boys. The Rev. Mr. Hall presided over a large gathering of Old Boys and their friends. The canon gave a brief but most interesting address on "Education.” A i number of musical items were given.
