NEW BOARD MEETS AT MOUNT ROSKILL

LIGHTS THAT FAILED Several members of the Mount Roskill Road Board at its meeting last evening complained of the inefficiency of the street lights, and it was suggested that the board was not getting its full quota of current. It was suggested by Mr. A. Roberts that on one occasion recently the whole of the lights in the eastern area were out for two hours. The Power Board is to be asked what is is going to do about This was the first meeting of the newly elected members, and the full board was present excepting Mr. J. Donald, who was Mr. E. F. Jones was unanimously elected chairman. The following committees were appointed: Finance, Messrs. T. Davies (chairman), G. A. Pearce, S. I. Goodall and J. Donald; works, Messrs. E. A. Pearce (chairman), T. Davies, G. E. Tansley, E. W. Foote and S. Scarborough; parks, Messrs. G. E. Tansley (chairman), A. Roberts, S. I. Goodall and S. Scarborough; town-planning, Messrs. The City Council notified its agreement to the proposal of permanently repairing the Drive, Selwyn Road, St. Andrew’s Road and Landscape Road, at a cost of £7,482, the board to pay half this amount, spread over five years. These terms were accepted. The Medical Officer of Health expressed the opinion that the rubbish dump has reached its limit of usefulness. He recommends that another site be found for this purpose and that the present tip be covered with soil. The board’s engineer reported that there was still plenty of room on the present site, which was segregated trom dwelling houses and should serve as a dump for another three or four years. It was decided that the Works Committee should visit the site and report at a future meeting. The engineer to the Highways Board wrote requesting the Road Board to give regular maintenance attention to the Mount Albert-Royal Oak main highway, by grading and maintaining the surface with a film of fine crushed stone or gravel, and so prevent the formation of pot-holes. It was pointed out that by this method the road may be kept in repair until such time as permanent reconstruction is commenced, according to the proposals which are now before the board. On the motion of Mr. T. Davies it was decided to defer action pending a conference with the engineer to the Highways Board. The tender of Mr. A. F. La Franchie (£240 6s) was accepted for the drainage on the Winstone Estate. Ten higher tenders were submitted. The engineer’s estimate was £2BO. The general account Is £539 in credit. Permits were granted for the erection of seven new buildings to the value of £2,455, while 15 new buildings are in course of erection in the disirict. Letters of appreciation of their services are to be sent to those members of the last board who were net elected on May 5.
