Fined For Assault.—Jolm Ryan, aged 40, who appeared at the Police Court to-day. was lined £2 for drunkenness* and £2 for assault. Stolen Boots.—Herbert Harold Payne, aged 44. who plt-aded guilty at tho Police Court to-day to a charge of stealing a pair of hoots, was remanded to appear for sentence next Tuesday. Stray Dogs and Leaking Taps.—The Mount Albert borough ranger reported to the council last night th;.t during the past three weeks two horses had been impounded, four stray dogs destroyed and 40 taps rewashemi. Suburban Train Alteration.—A slight alteration to the 5 p.m. Ota-huhu-Auckland train as from Monday next is advertised in this issue by the Railway Department. Brownlie Family Bereaved The Brownlie family, well known to Rugby fame, suffered a bereavement last week, through the death at Napier Hospital of Miss Grace Browniie. a younger sister of tho All Black for* wards. Washhouse on Fire. —Fire partly gutted a washhouse adjoining a house at 143 Newton Road, occupied by Mr* E. J. Turvey, shortly after 4 o'clock this morning. The owner is Mr. Moore. A policy for £250 is held the contents. Buried Under Pumice. Severe bruises were received by Ronald Richea, aged 11 years, when a pumice bank on his father’s farm at Taumarunui gave way and burled him. He was extri** cated by an elder brother. Midwifery Course.—The possibility of an adequate midwifery course at the Auckland Hospital was suggested yesterday by the chairman, Mr. William Wallace. Such a department, he emphasised. was an urgent necessity. Victim of Shooting Accident.— Thi victim. Mr. F. J. Simpsor. of a recent shc-oting accident at the Tuai hydroelectric works, near Wairoa, died in hospital this morning. An inquest will be held. Fall From Scooter.—Beryl Bokek aged 4, fell from her scooter outsidp her home in Huia Road. Point Chevalier. this morning. She is in the Auckland Hospital suffering from bruises. Rugby Players Suspended.—For striking a player in a Rugby match in Christchurch, against the University team on Saturday, J. Jeffries, the Merivale and Canterbury representative forward, has been suspended for one ;l ar by the Canterbury Rugby Union. Milk Van Hits Fish Lorry.—A collision occurred between a motor milk van and a lorry, owned by Waikato Fish Supply, on the hospital hill about six o’clock last night. The front wheels and mudguards of both vehicles wore extensively damaged. No one was injured.
Motor-cycle and Car.—As the result of a collision between a motor-c.tr driven by Mr. J. Sheehan, of and a motor-cycle at Inglewood, near New Plymouth, yesterday morning, Mr. H. Brewster, the rider of the motorcycle, was taken to hospital with g, broken leg. Shortage of Doctors.—The shorted of medical men was referred to yesterday by Dr. Maguire, medical superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, who said the hospital had been working short-handed for some time. The number of qualified men being turned nut from the Otago Medical School, he said, was diminishing. Dangerous Crossing.—The Mount Albert Borough Council is requesting residents to remove from their properties trees obstructing the view at the Argyle Street railway crossing, the scene of several fatal accidents. Advice has been received by the council from the Prime Minister that the provision of a “wig-wag” signal is under ConsiderationConsolidation of Schools.—Consolidation of schools in country districts wa_a urged by Mr. H. S. W. King at to-day’s meeting of the Education Board. lie said that improved country roads made It possible in some districts- Mr. T. U. Wells pointed out that although the Courcil of Education had approved of the principle, it realised that the expenses of transit were very great in New Zealand.
Leave For Teachers.—“ls there any restriction on the number of occasions on which special leave with salary may be granted to a teacher?” was a question asked of the department by the Auckland Education Board rc-cently. The department has replied that it cannot fix any definite rule, and it must leave it to the board’s discretion to grant an application “on more than one occasion.”
