WITHIN GUNSHOT OF BASE
FOREIGN BID FOR LAND AT SINGAPORE (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian P.A. —United Service) LONDON, Monday. In the House of Commons to-day the Secretary of State for the Dominions, Mr. L. S. Amery, was asked if he knew whether a foreign Power had purchased land within gunshot of the Singapore naval base. In reply, he said he had seen a statement to the effect that foreign companies had offered to buy from the Sultan of Jahore a leased island within the settlement. He was inquiring into the matter.
