FRESH BANANA SHIPMENT LEMONS IN POOR DEMAND Best grade apples are meeting with a slightly better demand in the City Marts. The Tofua, from Fiji, brought a fresh shipment of bananas to a bare market yesterday afternoon. Her cargo included oranges and mandaThe majority of the Tofua’s shipment of bananas are green, and will he sold ex the ship's side. The mandarins and oranges so far have opened out in good condition, and are sweet to the taste. There is little actual change to report in the market for pears and apples, but there is certainly a better demand for the choicest grades. The market for local lemons continues to register a downward tendency. Really choice tomatoes are still fetching fair values, hothouse making 4d to 6&d a lb. Consignments from the TTutt mostly arrive in bad condition, and are hard to quit. Green vegetables are offering freely, though a sustained demands, that tends to increase as the weather becomes colder, holds values practically unchanged. The market for eggs remains unchanged. Quotations lifted from the City Marts this morning ranged as follow: Fruit Apples.—Delicious, 4s to 6s a case; Jonathans, 5s 6d to 7s 6d: Monroes, 5s to 6s: Ballarat.s, 5s to 6s 6d; Spys, 5s to 6s 6d: Sharp’s Late Red, 5s to 5s 6d; Granny Smiths, 6s to 7s 6d. Pears.—Nelis and Coles, 8s to 10s 6d a case; P. Barrys, 5s to 6s: Beurre Deil (over-ripe), 3s to 4s; cooking pears, 5s to 6s. Tomatoes.—Local, choice 4s 6d to Ss a case, No. 2 2s to 4s; Hutt, 2s to 4s. Grapes.—Choice hothouse, Is 3d to £s a lb; Sydney, white, 17s 6d to ISs 6d a case. Passions, 6s to 11s a case, according to quality. Persimmons, 3s to 5s 6d a box. Lemons, local, 8s to 16s a case. Bananas.—Repacks, 30s a case (approximately 6d a lb wholesale). Oranges.—American Valencias, 47s to 40s a case; Island, 23s to 24s a case; repacks, 28s. Mushrooms.—6d to Is a lb, for good samples. Vegetables Potatoes. —Southern, 7s to 8s a cwt. Onions. —6s to 9s a cwt. Kumeras.—Local, 9s to 11s a cwt; 5s to 6s a bag. Cabbages.—4s to 14s a sack. Cauliflowers. —4s to , 14s a sack. Swedes. —2s 6d to 4s 6d a bag. Pumpkins.—4s tc 9s a cwt. Green Peas.—Bs to 13s a bag. Beans.—6s to 13s a bag. Lettuces. —Is to 5s a case.
