BIG-GAME FISHING

SEASON’S RECORDS TWENTY TONS OF FISH (From Out Own Correspondent J RUSSELL, Monday. No fewer than 183 big game fish were landed on rod and line during the 1927-28 season, the total weight being 20 tons 13cwt. 1101 b. The record catch for the season was ma.de by a New Zealander, Mr. H. A. Britton, who landed a black marlin on March 16, while fishing- off Cape Brett. It turned the scales at 8761 b. Lord and Lady Grimthorpe paid .a visit to the grounds during the season, and Lord Grimthorpe was lucky in landing the world’s record mako shark. It turned the scales at 6301 b. This angler has had the jaw of the fish preserved by the taxidermist at Otehei Bay and it is being shipped home to England. SHARKS FOR SHOES Lady Grimthorpe had the skin of The mako preserved and it is her intention to turn the hide into useful articles, such as shoes, etc. It is not generally known that sharks’ skins are now being put to profitable use. In Australia there is a large industry which employs a number of hands in dealing with the sharks, but so far no one has attempted such a venture in New Zealand. Big game fi: ) numbering 183 and weighing nearly 21 tons were caught during the season. They comprised 97 mako sharks, 63 swordfish, 14 hammerhead sharks, 9 black marlin, 1 broadbill, 1 thresher shark. SEASON’S RECORDS Following is a list of the record biggame fish caught during the season: Black marlin, 8761 b., caught by Mr. H. A. Britton, Talhape. Broadbill, 6731 b., Mr. N. WliiteWickham, London. Mako shark, 6301 b., Lord Grimthorpe, Leeds. Swordfish, 4101 b., Mr. J. W. Kershaw, Martinborough. Hammerhead shark, 4001 b. * Mr. H. White Wickham, London.
