ENGLISH ON THE AIR

Sir,— One read with much interest the remarks of Professor Maxwell Walker in regard to New Zealand speech and correct pronunciation. This is a matter that merits the attention of all who have the desire to see the English tongue maintained as English, and not as a conglomeration of American slang. The present may not, therefore, be an inappropriate opportunity to make reference to the excellent English that one has heard over the air of late from the Auckland broadcasting station. The Radio Broadcasting Company has been fortunate in presenting a good exposition of the art of speaking the Kings English by a cultured speaker who has given much pleasure to many listeners-in. Both the regular announcer and his substitute well merit our thanks in this connection. Surely this question of speech is one vital to the future of broadcasting in all the English-speaking countries. COUNTRY WIRELESS.
