CITY COUNCIL EXTRAVAGANCE

Sir,— With regard to the increases of salaries granted by the City Council at its latest meeting I presume that th© Labour members and also Mr. Murray voted against these at the time. I think it is now their duty to give notice of motion to rescind the resolution granting these increases, so that the matter can be debated again in open council before the ratepayers, and let us know clearly the councillors who spend our money so “wisely,” as Mr. Allum says. A few months ago a large number of men were paid off on the grounds that there was no money to pay for further work; now the council can find several hundred pounds without any trouble to give to five or six already well-paid officials. It will be interesting to hear the councillors’ answer to this when they next appear before the ratepayers for their support. RATEPAYER.
