FARMERS’ MOTOR-CARS
What proportion of the motor vehicles of New Zealand are owned by the farmers? Our statistics do not give any clue at all to this, but it seems that in America they have sorted out their figures. The -American Motorist ' makes the following comment or* a reduction in motor taxation now being: sought in that country. “American farmers, owning mor»> than one-third of the motor vehicles registered in the United States, have 25.000.000 dollars at stake in the fight for abolition of the War Excise Tax on automobiles. That the farm boasts the largest group ownership of cars may come to many as a surprising fact. 1 but such is the case. j "The picture of traffic congestion in the city gives rise to the thought that a majority of the nation's motor-cars are owned in the larger communities. This is not the case, for 36.5 per cent, of the cars are owned by those engaged in agriculture. ' Therefore. the farmer stands to ; profit to the extent of more than ; 25.000.000 dollars if the excise tax is removed by Congress. It is a boon that may be awarded without the flavour of a subsidy or a class benefit, and it will • rrove helpful, too."
