PROTEST BY WAIPA Exception to the Motor Regulation* axe taken by the Waipa County Council At a meeting of the council yesterday the chairman read a letter he had written on the subject to the Minister of Public Works, and in which he had denied the right of the Govermment to prevent local bodies from making bylaws restricting the speed of can on roads under their controL The letter also said the council was most anxious to co-operate with the Main Highways Board in providing better highways, but would be chary about asking ratepayers to provide money for this purpose if the coundU powers of control were to be superseded by Government regulations which appeared to be enacted largely to wmt the wishes of rresponsible motor union* and automobile associations, and which threatened to turn the roads into speedways for motorists. In conclusion the chairman said he hoped the Minister would see his W clear to amend the regulations, so as not to unduly infringe upon the council's right to fix speed limits.
