Final Totals £64,028 Bus Loss

TRAMS £18,942 UP FIGURES BEFORE COMMISSION Final figures for tram and bus operations for the year 1927-28, ended on March 31, show that the loss on the bus department was £64,028 14s 10d, while the trams finished with a profit of £18,942 15s. The tram revenue accounts shows traffic receipts £609,570 12s 6d, and sundry revenue, including £5,577 for advertising, £6,750 0s 2d. On the debit side are: Traffic expenses, £232,950 10s 4d (including £98,954 for power and £214,023 for wages); repairs and maintenance, £101,862 11s 3d (including £37,407 for permanent way); administration and general, £12,891 12s 7d; sundries, £22,006 11s 9d. The account therefore showed a total of £616,350 12s 8d for credits and £455,773 17s 4d for debits, leaving £160,576 15s 4d to go to the net revenue account. This account allowed for interest and sinking fund, £88,380 and £36,135 respectively, and showed finally the £18,942 15s profit on the year’s working, and a credit balance on the whole account of £62,144 14s Id. BUS ACCOUNTS The bus undertaking showed the following:— Income: Traffic receipts £93,246 6s 2d, sundry £434 4s 4d. Totals: Revenue, £93,680 10s 6d; expenditure, £128,199 Is lid; debit balance, £34,518 11s sd. This debit balance, carried to the net revenue account, and added to the previous debit of £81,475 14s. interest, depreciation, etc., totalled £145,504 3s sd, leaving a deficiency on the year of £64,028 14s lOd, and a total debit balance of £145,504 8s lOd. Taken together, the two undertakings are therefore in debit to the extent of £83,359 14s 9d. Mr. A. E. Ford, tramways manager, told the Transport Commission this morning that the bus year had been a bad one owing to the many changes that had been made. At times 80 buses were on the road, and for a long period it had been necessary to run 77 or so. Now the number was reduced to 58, and it was expected that the ensuing year would show a very different position.
