MAJESTIC
"THE BLOOD SHIP” Unprecedented audiences are being attracted to the Majestic Theatre, where a delightfully bright and varied programme, headed by “The Blood Ship,” is being offered to Auckland picturegoers. Hobart Bosworth, the distinguished stage and screen star who plays the part of James Newman in “The Blood Ship,” gives a greater characterisation in this role than any other he has yet portrayed. “The Blood Ship” brings back in scenes of stirring intensity the colourful days of a bygone era. A mutiny of rebellious sailors on “The Golden Bough,” nicknamed “The Blood Ship,” because of the fiendish brutality of its captain and his bestial first mate. Through it all the sweet romance of a youth and a maid that plays upon the heartstrings of even the most callous. A very notable feature on the supporting programme is “The Battle of the Century,” a hilarious t.wo-reel comedy starring those “minstrels of mirth,” Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. This comedy is another of those uproarious farces dealing with pugilism and custard pies. This week an all-British budget of Motherland happenings is contained in the Majestic Magazine. Among the many scenes are those of the British Fair at Birmingham, His Majesty’s Industrial Fair, the launching of the H.M.S. Sussex, sledging at St. Mortiz, a wreck on the Cornish coast, and the Eton College steeplechase. “Christchurch,” is the city depicted in the popular New Zealand scenic on the programme. Scenes are shown of the River Avon, flowing through the city, the town’s busy thoroughfares, and the well-known “Bridge of Remembrance.” The musical programme provided by Mr. Whiteford-Waugh and his Majestic Orchestra, is an entertainment- in itself. In addition to the special musical score arranged for the photoplay, this talented band of musicians play as their overture, “The Flying Dutchman” (Wagner). A popular stage prologue is presented by the renowned Majestic Quartet, who against a very effective seascape background, present a number of appropriate sea chanties.
