LEAGUE

Ngaruawahia and Huntly met on the former’s ground in a Rugby League match on Saturday. Huntly won by 15 to 9, and were perhaps a trifle lucky, though beaten for the ball in the scrums. Mr. Woods made an efficient referee, a feature being his promptitude with the whistle when wanted. Smith (2), Timms (1) were the go-getters; Huia Mason (2) and D. Whorslcey (1) the kickers. Ngaruawahia’s score was made up by a try and three goals, the latter being kicked by D. Hall, a younger brother of Wilson Hall, and a promising five-eighth, too. Tittleton, three-quarter, with Hall, were the pick of the losers’ rearguard, while Menzies was outstanding among the vanguard. Of the winners, George Ravner (full), was the best back on the ground, and Smith played a good game, one of his tries being a nippy piece of work from 30yds out. Mason, Timms and Stephenson had the honours between them for the front-rankers. A regrettable feature -was that Dave Rodgers, Huntly’s popular wing- threequarter, broke his right wrist due to colliding with another player. The affair was purely accidental. S. Farrar took his place in the team for the rest of the afternoon. Taupiri schoolboys beat Huntly at Taupiri by one try to nil, after a very even game. Glenmassey Juniors are not a light forward team by any means, and their pack would probably more than compare with many senior thirteens, and it was not to be wondered at that the Huntly Juniors “got it where the chicken got the axe” last Saturday at the Glen. Evans finished up with four free and two dropped goals, Connew adding two tries to make it 18 up in the Glen’s favour ere referee W. Burke sounded the close. Mr. Burke’s decisions were prompt and correct, but he was inclined to be generous to the talkative section. Glen Massey should have won by a wider margin, but selfish play lost them many points.
