MAJOR SEGRAVE’S AMBITION
It is interesting to note the ambition entertained by Major Segrave of placing England first in speed on land, sea, and air. According to a special correspondent of the “Morning Post,” 100 miles an hour by sea and 240 miles an hour on land are the terrific speeds that this disciple of the motor engine intends to aim at —within the space of 10 days. One hundred miles an hour at sea is at present at undreamt of speed. “It will mean that a huge engine will bo supported by a frail shell, and that the slightest wave might be enough to break th© boat to pieces while it is hurtling through the water.” Some idea of the speed which it is hoped to attain can be imagined when it is recalled that the two fastest destroyers in Great Britain are able to reach only a maximum of 39 knots, and that the fastest coastal motor-boat has attained 45 knots.
The world’s water speed record is now held by America, with 85 m.p.h. in a Gar Wood at Miami last year.
