BIGAMY CHARGE
FIRST WIFE THROWS CAUSTIC SODA TWO WOMEN IN COURT Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. An unusual story was told in the Magistrate’s Court to-day when George Creasey appeared on a charge of bigamy. The police alleged that Creasey married his first wife in England in 1919, the woman being the widow of a Frenchman. They came to New Zealand and settled at Invercargill. Not long afterwards the wife was granted a separation and maintenance order, which the husband did not obey. Finally the woman grew desperate and attacked him, throwing a mixture of caustic soda in his face. For that offence she was sentenced to 12 months in gaol, and she was only free now. During the past year, it was alleged, accused advertised for a wife and married a woman at Lincoln styling himself a widower. Both wives were in court. After evidence had been given accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed.
