SUICIDE BY SHOOTING
DEPRESSED AFTER ILLNESS YOUNG MAN’S DEATH (From Our Own Correspondent) TAUMARUNUI, Monday. An inquest was held to-day, before Mr. A. S. Laird, coroner, concerning the death of Hamilton Miles, a single man, aged 25 years, who was found shot, in his father’s shed, on Saturday. The evidence showed that Miles had recently had a severe attack of influenza, but had refused to go to bed. Dr. E. Vivian said that influenza always left one depressed, and he suggested that this depression was accentuated by Miles’s refusal to rest. William Miles, father of deceased, said that on his son’s arrival at home three weeks ago he appeared to be very much depressed, although r he was sometimes cheerful. On Saturday morning witness and another son went out to do the milking, and 10 minutes later heard a shot. They thought Miles was shooting rabbits. Witness later recalled his son’s depressed state of mind, and went to look for him, and found him in the carpenter’s shed with a rifle by his side.
The coroner returned a verdict that deceased shot himself while in a state of extreme mental depression.
