Obituary

CANON A. COMPTON Canon A. W. H. Compton, of Wanganui, died suddenly in New Plymouth yesterday. Born in London in 1868, Canon Compton became vicar of Waimate Plains, Taranaki, in 1896, going to Wanganui in 1903 and to Mangatainoka in 1906. Subsequently he was Warden of Bishop Hadfield Hostel, Wellington, in 1909; vicar of Greymouth in 1914; and vicar of Brookfield in 1920. He was awarded the Queen’s Medal with three clasps for service as a chaplain in the South African War, and was author of the pamphlet “Some Familiar Hymns.” MR. J. THACKER The death occurred on Sunday, at the age of 90, of Mr. James John Thacker, of Milford. Deceased, who was a native of Devon, arrived in New Zealand in 1874. He was clerk of works to the Borough Council at Napier, where he lived for 12 years. He took up farming at Whariti and retired to Milford a few years ago to become an inspector of works in the Government service. He is survived by three sons and six daughters, while there are 29 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. MR. H. C. DAWSON Mr. Howard Cecil Dawson, who died in Auckland last week aged 49. was born and educated in Christchurch. He began business with the Christchurch Meat Company and was in charge before he left to become manager and secretary of the Tokomaru Bay Sheep Farmers’ Freezing Company. After 11 years in that position he left the meat business to join the staff of Hancock and Company, Ltd., of Auckland. MR. R. T. YOUNG Mr. Ralph Todd Young, aged 84 years, died at Gisborne last week. For some time he was a settler in the district between Buckland and Pukekohe East, while he was also a Maori War veteran. Born at Berwick-on-Tweed he came to New Zealand in 1861. He was severely wounded in an engagement with the Maoris at Pukekohe , East in 1863 and was invalided out of | the service. He settled in the district, i but on the death of his wife 16 years ago, he went to live with a married 1 daughter in Gisborne.
