PUWHERO TOO GOOD AT HAWERA
PAITONU’S BIG SURPRISE WENDAY WINS FIRST HURDLE RACE (Special to THE SUN) HAWERA, Saturday! Fine weather prevailed for the Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting, which terminated at Hawera to-day before a large attendance. The totalisator account amounted to £21,000. On the second day last year, £17,592 was put through. The total for the meeting was £39,455 10s, an increase of £4,631 on last year. Splendid Finish There were eight runners in the Ngamutu Hack Handicap, Desert Lad, £1,044, being a warm favourite, with Freeze Out £502, and Miss Mercia £386, also well backed. From a splendid start Onward went into the lead followed by Monsogne and Desert Lad. As they crossed the top, Onward still led, with Desert Lad next and then came Monsogne, Freeze Out and Segment. Entering the straight the order was the same, and a splendid finish resulted in a win for Monsogne by a nose from Desert Lad. Orcades was a length away third, and Segment fourth. The winner’s name was omitted from the list of acceptances. Wenday Takes Command
Blago was the early leader in the Hurdles, from Glengariff and Whisogne. As they passed the stands Blago, Whisogne, Glengariff, Wenday, Airtight, Raehepoto and Vexatious were running in the order named. As they entered the back stretch, Wenday took
command, and was still in charge crossing the top. Wenday led into the straight and finished half a length ahead of Vexatious, who was four lengths ahead of Troilus. Puwhero Jumps Well Puwhero £687, Comical £437 and Passin’ Through £3BO were backed in the order named. Puwhero took the lead at the start and led through the straight, followed by San Fera, Comical, Son o’ Mine and Gilgai. The order was the same along the back, but at the half mile San Fera led up to Puwhero, and led crossing the top. Here Comical, whose rider had lost an iron early, lost his rider and Radiate fell. Puwhero was up with San Fera entering the straight, and both took the last obstacle together. Puwhero jumped the better and drew out to win by three lengths from San Fera, who beat Son o’ Mine by 10 lengths. Gilgai was two lengths further back and then came Passin’ Through and Haeremai. C. Saggart, the rider of Comical, broke his collarbone, and P. Holman, on Radiate, was badly bruised by falls. Good Finish Broad Acre £657, Partaga £520 and Silvermine £4BB were the most fancied for the open sprint. Ned Kelly was the first to show out from Lorna Doone, Broad Acre and Silvermine. As they crossed the top Broad Acre was in the second position, Ned Kelly still making the pace. After them came Lorna Doone, Silvermine and Partaga together, with Melissa and Bonogne. They were running in practically the same order as they entered the straight, but the field had closed up. Broad Acre looked a winner at the distance, but Partaga and Melissa headed him, and fought out a good finish, Partaga winning by a short neck, with Broad Acre two lengths away third. Silvermine was fourth and Bonogne fifth. Big Field Out There were 14 starters in ' Shorts Hack Handicap. Royal Lover, Eka and Le Champ were backed in that order. Argue jumped into the lead at the start and, crossing the top, had Le Champ, Segment, Eka Tangerim and Buster Cut as his nearest attendants. As they entered the straight Argue and Le Champ were together just in front of Eka, with Tanagerim and Segment handy. In a good finish Segment got up to win by a head from Le Champ, who beat Tanagerim by half a length. Argue was fourth, and then came Royal Lover and Eka. Outsider Beats Favourite In the Davidson Handicap, Benzora (£692) was sorted out as the most likely winner. Dayguard (£682) and Flying Juliet (£531) were also well backed. Dayguard was first to show out from Blimp, Hipo, Captain Gazeley, and Benzora. Entering the back
stretch, Dayguard still led, but crossing the top Hipo was up with him. and then came Blimp, Flying Juliet, and Benzora. Dayguard was first to turn for home, just ahead of Blimp, and then came Hipo, Flying Juliet, and Benzora, with Paitonu next. The lastnamed finished fast, and just got up to beat Benzora by a head, with Blimp half a length away third. Then came Dayguard, Orozone, and Hipo. Mendip Bolts Home Considered to be better suited by the shorter distance, Mendip was expected to show considerable improvement on his first day’s showing, and
