MAORI “FINES”

Sir, — The attempt by the Ratana “Court” to impose and collect fines is by no means a new move on the part of a section of the Maori race. The other day I came across a scale of “fines” issued in the name of the Maori king, away back in the 60’s. The steamship Lord Worsley was wrecked on the Taranaki coast, and help was required by the unfortunate passengers and crew. A board was put up, demanding, in the name of the king, the following:—A minister of the Gospel, £SO; newspaper mail, £300; Maori disciple of the Governor, £200; pakeha policeman. £500; a preaching Maori minister, £55: for “a tempting letter,” £SOO. Needless to say these sums were not collected. There was also a “scale of charges” through the king’s domains—incidentally one of the causes of the Waikato War. MAORILANDER.
