BIGAMIST SENTENCED

FIVE YEARS’ TERM JUDGE’S SERIOUS VIEW “This case is a very bad one. You have a very bad criminal record. You married this unfortunate woman and in going through the form of marriage there is very little difference from rape.” Mr. Justice Blair thus admonished EcftTard Charles Townshend, an Australian, who appeared before him for sentence in the Supreme Court this morning, on a charge of bigamy at Auckland. The prisoner intimated that he was at present serving a sentence of three years, of which he had done eight months. His Honour pronounced sentence of five years’ hard labour, to be concurrent with his existing term of reformative detention.
