EAST INDIAN STRIKE MORE GRAVE WORKERS ATTACK TRAMS (United P. A. — By Telegraph—Copyright ) (Australian Press Association.) Reed. noon. CALCUTTA, Friday. The derailment of the Dehradun express 172 miles north of Calcutta has a deep significance, as it was evident that there was ann intention to wreck the Bombay mail, which would be passing in half an hour. The rails were tampered with, bu 1 the miscreants had insufficient time, and were only able to loosen the plates. The strikers have been heard uttering threats. z The East Indian railway strike took a grave turn on Thursday evening, when thousands of strikers held up the traffic in the business quarter of Calcutta. They attacked European offi cials an dciviilans in private motor cars. Trains were obstructed on the Howrah-Amta railway, and the passengers were ordered out.
Trams were bombarded with stoma The strikers boarded the trams and robbed the conductors and dragged oui and assaulted the i*‘cupants, who were escorted to safety ljy armed police.
The attacks were mostly confined to police officers, whose cars were wrecked.
The arrest of a strike leader named Banerjee, who recently returned from Moscow, was the signal fer a wild rush by thousands in an attempt to rescue him. The police were forced to release him at last.
The tram services are suspended and Europeans are forbidden to use the roads in the strike area. The Bombay mill strikers have received £ 3,000 from Moscow
