NATIONAL AND LYRIC

“SQUARE CROOKS” AND “SIMPLE SIS” “Simple Sis,” an uproarious comedy, is now being shown at the National and Lyric Theatres, starring Louise Fazenda and Clyde Cook. It is a story of a wistful, woeful laundress, longing for boy friends such as her prettier workmates have, bt) never able to attract them. One evening, she meets her boss in the park, but he scorns her. As Sissie mourns her fate a pickpocket comes along and tries to steal her purse, but she knocks him out with a ju-jitsu trick. She has him begging for mercy, when Jerry O’Grady, the girl-shy but husky little driver of the laundry truck arrives. Jerry tries a bit of his science on the thief, who limps off with rags, black eyes and abject apologies. “Square Crooks,” a Fox film of merit, completes an altogether strong bill. There is abundant comedy, with many tense situations, which give it variety. The story is about two former crooks. Eddie Ellison and Larry Scott, both of whom are trying to go straight. It is no fault of theirs that a dying friend of Larry’s steals a diamond necklace and begs Larry to dispose of it and send the proceeds to his wife and family. Suspicion falls on the boys, as they have been discharged a day before the robbery. Complications set in when the jewels again are stolen by Mike Ross, a crook wanted for murder. The manner in which they unravel the mystery and capture Ross forms the basis for a thrilling and emotional comedy drama.
