“CONFETTI” BRITISH- AMERICAN OFFERING ‘‘Confetti,” the first of First National’s British-made pictures to reach this part of the world, was privately screened yesterday at the Tivoli Theatre. Jack Buchanan, of musical comedy and revue fame, played the leading role. Annette Benson was cast opposite. Sidney Fairbrother was responsible for an excellent characterisation as a cynical old woman who wp.s inclined to laugh at the carnival time of youth. The feature was filmed in Britain with British artists, under American supervision. \V. J. Ham, the American director, obtained some enjoyable effects, particularly in the carnival scenes. “Confetti” was screened by the O'Brien management at the request of Mr. Erroll Fuller, Auckland manager for First National. During the past year two-reel comedies have come into a tremendous vogue all over the world. This fact was brought to light at Metro-Gold-wyn- Mayer’s International Congress held in New York recently. Mr. David Lake, general sales manager for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Australia and New Zealand states that Hal Roach dominates the comedy field and that Charlie Chase, under exclusive contract to Roach and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is the most sought-after of all comedy stars, and a number of companies were extremely anxious to secure him for feature length comedies. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer decided the matter by signing him up on a fiveVPa p contract however.
