EL DORADO
THAMES GOLD-SEEKERS
GOVERNMENT AID SOUGHT Mining interests are among those controlled at present by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, who took the portfolios over from the Hon. G. J. Anderson. As a result he was called on, at Thames yesterday, to hear requests for assistance from the directors of the Moanataiari and New Occidental Mining Companies. The Moanataiari Company sought an arrangement whereby its battery could be converted to a public battery, and the New Occidental sought aid for the driving of a new low-level drive, which would exploit several well-known reefs. “I am satisfied,” said Mr. Peter Watson, for the Moanataiari concern, “that we have not yet reached the parent lode.” “We want to revive the spirit of mining,” said Mr. W. M. Gimson, mining engineer. “Results have not been encouraging,” said Mr. Coates, with reference to the recent history of mining generally in New Zealand. “It is really a question of the amount of money we have to spare for assistance to goldmining.” He promised consideration in both instances.
