Fewer Great Men Than Forty Years Ago G. B. SHAW’S OPINIONS The Archbishop of Canterbury consider? the present age lacks great personalities. In an after-luncheon speech in London, as the guest of the Institute of Journalists, he said: “Nothing strikes me so much as the

absence now, as compared with 40 years ago, of great personalities outstanding among their fellows. “We have a high level in public life, but we have not got anyone at all corresponding to those outstanding personalities who dominated Europe or England in that time.” The Archbishop is in his SOth year. Mr. Bernard Shaw, who will be 72 years old next July, was asked in an interview what he thought of the Archbishop’s opinions, and his reply was: Some Famous Names “I am an Old Victorian myself. I belong to the Archbishop of Canterbury’s period. I think there were one or two noticeable people 40 years ago. “The fact of the matter is that today there are so many outstanding personalities that they are not noticed.” Below are two lists of famous names —the first_ ot great personalities living in IS7B and probably known to all, and the second a list for 1928: 187 S. 1925.
