PREFERENCE WANTED
local timber industry agreement on new award Two principles were agreed on by employers and workers in the timber-trade dispute heard at a Conciliation Council meeting yesterday. The first was that if all parties ngreed to become members of their unions or associations it would tend to promote mutual understanding between employers and employees. The second was the timber trade, which was not prosperous at present, could be greatly helped if local bodies and those responsible for building regulations would give preference to local timber over the imported article. It was suggested that the Government should assist by placing restrictions on foreign timber. The council met to adjust differences in hours, wages and general conditions of employment in the industry. r The assessors for the employers, who were the applicants, were Messrs. A. B. Collier, Hamilton; H. B. Coupe, Putaruru; and L>. C. Clayton, Auckland. Mr. S. E. Wright, secretary of the Employers’ Association, acted as agent for the employers. The union was represented by Messrs. P. Davis, T. Inglis and F. G. Boon, of Auckland. Mr. E. Phelan, secretary of the Timber Workers’ Union, acted as agent. Mr. P. Hally. Conciliation Commissioner, presided. An agreement was arrived at on similar iines to the award which has been in existence for the past two years. Some modifications were made in respect of one or two of the machinery clauses. The period for which the new award exists will be for two years from May 31.
