WINS FIRST STEEPLECHASE DAY GUARD’S VICTORY SAN FERA’S PROMISING DEBUT (Special to THE SUNJ HAWERA, Thursday. The Egmont meeting opened to-day in beautiful weather on a course in excellent order. In the Tongahoe Hurdles Airtight was first to show out from Glengariff, but as they raced through the straight Mister Gamp held command from Olympic, with Glengariff, Rahepoto, Ngata. Airtight, Wenday and Mount Marta following in order. As they entered the back sterach Mister Gamp was three lengths ahead from Mount Marta, with Olympic and Airtight next, and then came Rahepoto and Vexations. Crossing the top Mister Gamp had increased his lead to six lengths, and he went on to win by eight lengths from Mount Marta, the latter beating Vexatious by a length an a-half. Then came Airtight, Wenday, Olympic and Troilus. Keddar Beats Miss Mercia Keddar was favourite for the Telegraph Handicap. Miss Mercia was quickest to begin from Royal Lover, and then came Le Champ, Segment and Keddar. As they crossed the top Royal Lover led from Miss Mercia, their nearest attendants being Orcades, Le Champ, Fermanagh and Keddar. Entering the straight Miss Mercia was piloting the field, followed by Orcades. Royal Lover and Keddar. In the run to tlie judge the last-named cut down the leaders and went on to win by two lengths from Miss Mercia, the latter beating Desert Lad by half a head. Orcades was fourth. A poor field contested the Hack Steeplechase. Banjuke led over the first obstacle, but Ruby Ring was in front as they raced through the straight from Banjuke, with Gilgai, Royal Heather, San Fera, Son o’ Mine and Waitanahau following in order. As they entered the back stretch Royal Heather was in front, and then came San Fera, Ruby Ring and Banjuke. At the half-mile San Fera went into the lead and was first to turn for home, with Waitanahau, Son o’ Mine and Royal Heather all in a bunch just behind the leader. San Fera drew out to win by three lengths from Royal Heather, with Son o’ Mine half a head away third. Gilgai was six lengths away fourth and Waitanahau fifth. The winner gave a fine exhibition of jumping. A Promising ’Chaser Brigadier Bill was favourite for the Egmont Steeplechase. After they had settled down Frisco Jack was in fro.nt from Passin’ Through, with Dick, Comical and Brigadier Bill next in order. At the jump before entering the back stretch Comical lost his ridei*. Frisco Jack held the lead round and through the straight again, where Brigadier Bill, Passin’ Through and Haeremai were nearest the leader. At the halfmile Frisco Jack looked all over a winner, as he was several lengths clear of Brigadier Bill, after whom came Passin’ Through, Bonny Rill and Haeremai. The next jump brought Frisco Jack down, and Brigadier Bill entered the straight just ahead of Passin' Through, with Bonny Rill next. Brigadier Bill drew out in the. straight to win by four lengths from Passin’ Through, who beat Bonny Rill by 100 yards Haeremai was fourth. Dick was pulled up after going a mile and a-half. In the Flying Handicap Seastar was first to show out from Ned Kelly, with Broadacre next. Lorna Doone was in front after a furlong had been covered from Silvermine, with Ned Kelly, Seastar and Broad Acre following. As they crossed the top Ned Kelly led from Silvermine, and then came Lorna. Doone, Partaga, Seastar, Broad Acre and Paul Lucerne. Racing round the turn Partaga shot into the lead and was first to turn for home from Ned Kelly, with Silvermine, Lorna Doone and Bonogne all close up. The last named finished fast and won by a head from Partaga, with Silvermine two and a-half lengths away third Then came Broad Acre, Flying Juliet. Paul Lucerne and Nastori. Day Guard Clears Out Day Guard won the Mcßae Memorial almost all the way. He was in front after two furlongs had been covered, being followed by Toapiti, Oration, Manly, Blimp, Yoma and Vivo. As they entered the back streach Day Guard was well clear of Toapaiti, and then came Oration, Vivo, Manly, Yoma and Blimp. At the half-mile Day

Guard was a couple of lengths ahead of Yoma, being followed by Oration and Town Bank. This was the order of the leaders into the straight, Day Guard going on to win very easily by four lengths from Yoma, the latter beating Town Bank by three lengths. Then came Blimp, who should do better soon Kilmiss, Orazone, Vivo and Nukumai.

In the Tawhiti Handicap Freeze Out led to the straight from Mendip and Gasnapper, but Kawhakina came from the back and won by a neck from Bisox, with Gasnapper a head away third and Freezeout right up fourth. Following are the results:
