ASHBURTON RACES TO BE HELD TO-MORROW

INTERESTING ONE-DAY BILL Tli© one-day fixture of the Ashburton County Racing Club comes up for decision to-morrow. The acceptances are as follow: LONGBEACH HACK HANDICAP Of £110; 6 furlongs

Valais Puzzle The sterling performance at Sydney recently of the live-year-old Vaals once more called attention to the diametric

change which seems to have come over the character of Valais horses. Whereas some of his early sons were notable for their youthful brilliance, those that «ame later have disappointed their owners in that respect. For instance, Heroic cost 1,800 guineas, and won L 11,801 as a two-year-old, while Manfred, Fujisan, Quintus and Valicare performed such great deeds at two and three years that buyers eagerly paid immense sums for yearlings, strong in the hope that they would land some of tT - rich prizes given for juvenile races. Vaals, a third season Valais, cost 2,000 guineas, which was then a record price for one of the sensational stallion’s stock, but whereas lie won only £1,757 as a two and three-year-old, he has gathered over £9,000 in stakes since. Two years ago 5,500 guineas was given for Valicare’s brother, Avant Courier, 4,100 for Sion, and 3.500 for Glenariff, but they won only one two-yea **-old race between them, while neither Gilt Edge, who cost 5,000 guineas last year, nor Glendew, 3,300 guineas, has yet troubled the judge. The recent sales indicated that buyers are no longer sanguine of getting a dazzling early-comer by Valais, though thev evidently expect them to do big things as they get older. The experience of Australians with Valais has been strangely similar to that of Americans with their champion Man */ War. His early stock quickly jumped into the limelight, but those that came later did not fulfil expectations.
