COLLIDED WITH LORRY
SERVICE DRIVER FINED CRASH AT MANUREWA “This is as bad a case of dangerous driving as I have heard,” said Mr. J. H. Luxfcrd, S.M., at the Onehunga Police Court this morning. A service car driver, Maxwell Joseph Smith, was charged with dangerous driving, having run into a lorry containing women and children near Manurewa on January 30 last. The evidence showed that, Smith, with service passengers, was on his way to Hamilton, and in overtaking the lorry svrerved to the left to avoid another car coming from the side. The three vehicles collided on the narrow road. Smith struck the lorry, smashing Its front wheels and throwing it to one side of the road. The driver of the lorry. Mr. W. B. Duncan, said Smith was travelling at about 45 miles an hour. Another witness, who ha.d been riding on the lorry, estimated the speed at between 30 and 40 miles an hour.
“You were on a good straight roac. and in charge of passengers who weie paying for hire.” said the magistrate to Smith. ‘‘You should have exercised a very high standard of duty and care. I am inclined to cancel *-*our licence, but instead will fine you £5 as a warairsr.”
