“LEFT TRAIL OF DEBTS”

POLICE OPINION OF ENGLISHMAN COURT REFUSES BAIL (Special to THE SUN) NAPIER, Thursday. “He apparently went over the ground from Auckland to Greymouth, incurring debts all the way. Further, he has announced his intention of leaving New Zealand at the earliest possible opportunity.” This was the police reply to the application for bail on behalf of Colin Cory ton, an Englishman aged 32, who was charged in the Police Court today with obtaining on April 4, at Rotorua, the sum of £ 300 from Mrs. Ellen Caroline Lowry, of Okawa, by falsely representing that he had k letter of credit for £I,OOO at the National Bank of New Zealand, Nelson, and which was being posted to him at Wairakei. Mr. A. H. D. Mayne appeared for the accused and asked for bail. Senior-Sergeant Powell opposed the application, on the grounds that accused was a single man, and, as far as was known, had no connections in New Zealand. He added that he understod that more developments might be pending. “Accused, when arrested, was on his way to visit the Sounds,” remarked Mr. Mayne. “I should suggest that in the event of bail being allowed he should report to the police station every day, or even twice a day. He cannot leave for England from Nosier, and, in the case of my former suggestion, he could be arreted in Wellington if he attempted to leave that way.” Mr. A. E. Renouf, J.P., refused the application for bail and remanded Coryton to appear before the magistrate on Monday.
