IN THE MARKET PLACE

PEAK PRICES FOR ORANGES BANANA STOCKS LOW A slight advance was registered in the market for apples earlier in the week. This was maintained at to-day s auctions. The market for most lines of fruit and garden produce remains steady with a healthy demand. A few strawberries from second crop harvests have bene selling- on the mart over the past week or so at Is 6d to 2s a chip. Hot-house grapes are making slightly better money at the moment, and regular supplies are now coming to hand from across the Tasman, Sydney whites selling at 16s to 19s a case, and blacks at 14s to 20s. Californian Valencias are making the season’s peak prices. A small shipment of Island oranges came to hand via Wellington over the week to meet with a ready sale at 20s to 25s a case The Waipahi left Auckland last evening for the Cook group for the first direct shipment for this port this season. Regular arrivals can now be expected. The Tofua is due with a fresh shipment of fruit from Fiji on Monday next. In the meantime bananas are scarce and dear, selling at the highest level for many weeks. Supplies of passions are considerably shorter. In the field and garden produce section most lines are well supplied and meeting with a steady demand. Local gardens are expected to be producing to full capacity within the next three weeks, when no doubt there will be a slight weakening in the market for a few lines. At the moment growers from lower down the Island are still sending forward fairly large consignments of most varieties of green vegetables. Citron melons, pumpkins, and celery are well supplied. Supplies of kumaras are more regular and good quality samples slightly firmer. The demand for eggs continues firm with a large percentage of small sorts coming forward. Quotations for large hen eggs have advanced another Id over the week. Steady trading with little to report is recorded in the poultry sections. Pullets are offering freely, but the quality of the greater portion of the offering is not the best, and only those close to laving meet with anythin— like a keen demand. Light hens are heavily supplied and dull of sale. Values for ducks are well maintained.
