SPEED OF BUSES
Sir,— The bus smash in Wheturangi Road the other night should draw attention to the speed of motor vehicles generally in this and other Auckland thoroughfares. Despite the fact that there is a school a few doors from Green Lane, attended by between 500 and 600 children, many drivers dash across the intersection at high speed and without sounding their horns, a constant menace to human life. This is one of the most dangerous intersections in the district, yet drivers cross it in the most reckless manner. I am not criticising the speed of the vehicles concerned In this particular disaster; 1 did not actually see it, although I heard the crash, and was on the scene within one minute. But, generally speaking, the manner in which both Wheturangi Road and Green Lane axe used for speeding is disgraceful. A factor which very greatly increases th© risk to life in these collisions is overcrowding. I have seen buses packed to suffocation, with men not only standing on the steps but sitting on the mudguards and radiator bonnet. With people standing on the front platform blocking the doorway, how can a driver be expected to see another vehicle approaching his left at an intersection? It is time the transport authorities made an end to bus overcrowding. WHETURANGI
