PLUNKET SUCCESS
ADDRESS BY SIR TRUBY KING The fight for infant life which has been going on in New Zealand for more than 20 years was described by Sir Truby King, the director of child welfare in the Dominion, in the course of an address to the Overseas League at a luncheon in London last month. “When we started,’’ Sir Truby said, “the infant mortality rate was 8 per cent., and the present rate is 3.9 per cent. In this period, moreover, the population has been greatly increasing. At the present moment, with a population of 1.500.000, we should be losing 1,000 more babies each year than we are if the death-rate were still S per cent.”
