MUNICIPAL CONCERT
ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME The high standard set by the present series of municipal concerts was well maintained at the Town Hall last evening when a pleasingly varied programme arranged by the city organist, Mr. Maughan Barnett, was received with unmistakable signs of appreciation by an audience of satisfactory proportions. Mr. Barnett’s numbers included the popular “Spinning Song” of Mendelssohn’s, Lemen’s spirited “Fanfare,” Corelli’s “Concerto” No. 12, “Allegro Contabile” from Widor’s Fifth Symphony, Vierne’s “Clair de Lune,” and the Bach “Fantasia and Fugue in G Minor.” The wide range represented in the above selection was exploited with the organist’s usual artistry and high interpretive ability, this being particularly noticeable during the Bach and Widor contributions. A welcome first appearance at these concerts was that of Miss Molly Wright, a ’cellist of unusual ability, whose items were warmly received. Miss Wright’s opening solo, “Allegro Appassionato” (Saint-Saens), found a very pure and clear tone, sharp and clean execution also being shown. The Martini-Kreisler “Andantino” and Popper’s “Tarantella” were also very enjoyable contributions, the audience voicing its appreciation by demanding several extra numbers. Miss Freda Gaudin, the possessor of a strong and pleasing soprano voice, sang “The Dawn Has a Song,” Montague Phillips, and Liza Lehmann’s arrangement of “Annie Laurie,” in addition to several recall numbers. Mr. Leo. Whittaker played the accompaniments in his usual artistic manner.
