DUTIES ON GRAIN
NORTH AND SOUTH DISAGREE CONFERENCE SUGGESTED Auckland businessmen do not agree with those in Canterbury over the question of duties on grain, and endeavours are being made to arrange for a conference to reach common ground. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce wrote to the Auckland body recently and suggested that possibly the differences of opinion between the Auckland and the Southern Chamber upon the duties on grain might be largely resolved if a delegation from the Auckland Chamber visited Canterbury and met representative business men there and studied the industry at first hand. The executive replied stating that as soon as new arrangements for the official delegation to Niue and Samoa had been finalised the Auckland Chamber would endeavour to arrange for a selected body of business men to visit Canterbury as suggested. Further correspondence with the Hon. W. Downie Stewart on the question of duties on grain is under consideration by a sub-committee, consisting of the president, immediate past-president, Mr. Winstone and the secretary, who will report to the May meeting of the council.
