Jumping Season Is Now At Hand

INORTHERN CANDIDATES AT HAWERA THE honour of launching what is termed the jumping season has for some time been entrusted to the Egmont Racing Club, and the fact that its winter meeting opens to-morrow and concludes on Saturday is a reminder, if such were needed, of the near approach of the Great Northern meeting.

\ GOOB number of horses from this ■*-*- province will be on hand at Hawera, and in addition several candidates for Great Northern honours will be seen in action over the obstacles. Thus local sportsmen have a doublebarrelled interest in the proceedings at the Taranaki centre to-morrow and on Saturday. Most of the events have filled very well, although the nominations showed a substantial decrease over previous years. In the two steeplechase events the fields are a bit on the small side, which is not an unusual feature. The big fences are located on the outside of the course proper, excepting across the top, where the horses go right out as at Te Rapa. The fences are by no means formidable, but the course can
