BUNNY PEST

Humour in Commons ; “TINNED CHICKEN” AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Press Association) LONDON, Monday. A Rabbits Bill, framed to enable the authorities to etxerminate rabbits when their depredations become serious, was to-day read a second time in the House of Commons. Members found the Bill most difficult to debate with becoming seriousness. Mr. T. Johnston, Labour member

for Dundee, supported the measure. He said a good remedy for the rabbit pest would be to encourage poaching. Sir Newton Moore, Conservative member for Richmond, said the

rabbit in Australia had once been treated as a nuisance, but was now a source of wealth. Some of the best “canned chicken” from Australia was really rabbit. (Laughter.) Mr. F. A. Macquisten. Conservative member for Argyll, said three of the worst nuisances in the Highlands were bracken, rabbits and steamboat traffic. The horse did less damage than rabbits.

Mr. J. Wheatley, Labour member for Shettleston, Glasgow, interjected: Are you referring to th* electric hare? (Laughter.) On behalf of the Government the Mr. J. Wheatley Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Walter Guiness, said there was no denial of the damage done to agriculture by rabbits. The only opposition was as regards the methods of preventing it. There was no division on the motion for the second reading.
