DANGER AHEAD?

WHITE AUSTRALIA POLICY PRESSURE OF EAST LONDON, May 1. “Australia’s selfish policy of practically excluding everybody is becoming one of the world’s danger spots,” said Dr. Grace Boelke, of Sydney. She has just concluded a four years’ tour of the Far East, Alaska, America, and the West Indies. “I am a firm believer in the White Australia policy,” ’she said. “I do not wish to see a piebald Australia, but if she refuses to accept a complete European civilisation to populate the country speedily she will undoubtedly be swamped by the Eastern peoples at no distant date. The Australian workers, who are largely responsible for this policy, are living in a fool’s paradise. Throughout the Asiatic countries there is not merely an enormous pressure of population, but also difficulty in securing food supplies. “There is an awakened intelligence, and a more intensive resentment against the domination of the white races, whose prestige has suffered tremendously as a result of the war, Dr. Woodrow Wilson’s policy of selfdetermination, and Bolshevism. They are not going to sit down and starve while Australia is almost empty.”
