TAXATION IN ENGLAND

VIEWS OF MR. W. R. MORRIS Advice has been received in Wellington that Mr. W. R. 31 orris, founder and head of Morris Motors, Ltd., commenting on the introduction of the petrol tax in England expressed the opinion that the horse-power tax which has been in vogue for so long has in no way proved a detriment to motor-car production at Home for, he says, under it British designers evolved the modern high efficiency engine which many leading foreign manufacturers are attempting to copy. The substitution of the petrol tax for the horse-power tax, if enforced, would not be to any great advantage to foreign car manufacturers selling in England because all foreign cars were much more extravagant on fuel than the English car. Again, the English car had so established its superiority that the removal of the horse-power tax would not mitigate it holding its own against more severe competition.
