PLAYFUL PARADOX In lining a stone-deaf motorist £1 for driving without a licence, the Magistrate's comment was, “This is a case where a licence should never be granted,” says “Contact” in the “Motor.” Some magistrates are hard to please, And topsy-turvyism mocks At sense in cases such as these, For here’s a sort of paradox. Admitted that the man, who ought To have a licence, ought to pay A tine because he hasn’t bought A licence; that’s as dear as day. But here, the bench says, is a case Where the defendant never ought To have a licence. On the face Of this remark one might have thought That there might be a doubt about Whether he really ought to pay The damage for not taking out What he ought not to have, they say!*
SEGRAVE’S TRIBUTE Major Segrave has just published a book, entitled “The Lure of Speed,” dealing with his experiences in motor racing. The volume is dedicated to Sir Charles Wakefield in the following terms: “This book is dedicated to Sir Charles Wakefield, Bart., in grateful appreciation of his never-failing help and kindly advice to me during the past eight years. A man whose enthusiasm in all fields of mechanical progress has led him to give his utmost assistance to those who, each in their own small way, have endeavoured to prove that the pioneering spirit is still alive in England to-day.—H. O. H. Segrave.”
