FROM DRUID DAYS HEBRIDEAN SONGS LYCEUM CLUB ADDRESS “The songs of the Hebrides have been handed down from generation to generation from Druid times,” said Miss Margaret Aitken, a Scottish singer, now visiting Auckland, in an address to the musical circle of the Lyceum Club last evening. Miss Aitken sang some of the songs delightfully to illustrate the poetic Gael in his moments of love, lamentation and joy. Until recent times, sne said, the* songs had never been put into manuscript form. Simplicity, pathos and intense feeling were tne three main characteristics. To the Hebrideans music was the natural outflow of their emotions —the woman in tears for her fisherman husband drowned in the stormy Hebridean seas, the mother rocking' her babe to sleep, the lover wooing a maiden, the clansman lamenting the death or a chieftain. The president of the club. Mrs. W. H. Parkes, introduced Miss Aitken and spoke of her fine work during the war. Mrs. Stringer played the accompaniments for Miss Aitken. The Misses Moore played two trios, one a Barcarolle and the second a composition by Dr. Thomas specially written for them. Mrs. Hobday contributed a song and Mrs. Bioy a pianoforte solo. AT MORNING TEA Tall vases of beautiful pink flowers decorated the dining-room of the Lyceum Club this morning, when the members of the gardening circle met at an enjoyable tea party, prior to their monthly business meeting. Mrs. A. Kidd, the convener of the circle and Airs. G. Garlick, the secretary, presided.
