To-Day’s Turf

ELLERSLIE DOINGS PREPARING FOR WINTER INTERESTING SCHOOLING TASKS Tt was the jumpers that took pride of pace at Ellerslie this morning, many schooling efforts being witnessed. Probably the best exhibition was that of Wee Marble, who gave an attractive display over the steeplechase fences on the flat. Lomint, who now bears a brighter eppearance as the result of her race at Avondale, was in company with Master Doon over six furlongs in 1.18 1-5. Master Doon had a couple of lengths’ advantage at the finish, but neither appeared to be doing its best. This gallop, together with the others, was executed on No. 3 irrass. Mounain Guide had Royal Trek ns a companion in a bout over six furlongs, the last five taking 1.6 2-5. Ladies’ Boy and Dave were associated in an easy half-mile, covered in 52 3-5. Recent racing has not affected the daughter of the defunct Some Boy 11. Ladies’ Boy will leave for Wanganui on Monday in charge of her trainer, W. Tozer, to compete in sprint events at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting. The stable companions, Phaola and Killute, were not far apart at the end of five furlongs, in 1.7 1-5. Several other slow gallops were timed, but the majority of the horses in attendance were restricted to easy exercise. THE JUMPERS That Salamander, who was ridden by C. Healey, is an improved jumper, was evident when the Polydamon gelding gave a smart exhibition over a round of the schooling hurdles. After a long absence from headquarters, Cool Stimulants is again an active member at Ellerslie. He was given an essay over several of the pony hurdles, and after a couple of attempts acquitted himself well. Master Clements was restricted to an essay over a couple of the pony hurdles. At the initial obstacle he did not jump too well. His second attempt, however, was a great deal better. A pleasing performance was that registered by Peka tahi (E. Garrett) and Archeno (J. Sharkey), who were sent over a round of the schooling hurdles. The pair were together practically throughout, and track watchers witnessed a clean exhibition of hurdling. Archeno was particularly fast at the fences. Quincoma (R. Olive) and Glenetta (H. Dulieu), both from R. Hall’s stable, were associated over four schooling hurdles. Quincoma was always in the van, and gave a sparkling display. Glenetta screwed at her fences, and did not negotiate the obstacles as well as she has done on previous occasions. Quincoma is nominated for hack hurdle events at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting, but he will be allowed to forego his engagements. Odin (T. Williams) accompanied Marble Mount (J. Meghan) oyer two schooling hurdles, and the latter then went on alone to complete five. His jumping gave no cause for complaint. Lord Bruce (J. Sharkey) was twice sent over the steeplechase fences on the fiat —the sod, double and stonewall. From the outset his showing was satisfactory, and he finished up his task well.

That Wee Marble may prove good enough to win a hack steeplechase during the winter months was the conclusion arrived at after the ponified son of Marble Arch had completed a task over the steeplechase fences on the flat. "Wee Marble, who was ridden by E. Garrett, had Clockwork (J. Sharkey) and Pompieus (T. Chaplin) to accompany him, and the trio finished in the abovenamed order. Wee Marble’s showing was without blemish, while Clockwork also jumped well, if a trifle carefully. Fault could have been found with the showing of Pompieus, but he will improve. Fiery Lad (R. Olive) also negotiated the steeplechase fences on the flat, and at the first fence of the double made a faulty jump, nearly dislodging his rider.
