WATER FOR PAPATOETOE

GOOD FLOW REGISTERED (From Our Oton Correspondent) PAPATOETOE, To-day. Messrs. Jones and Adams, water engineers to the Papatoetoe Town Board, attended a special meeting of the board last evening, and submitted plans and estimates of the proposed reticulation of the town board district with a water supply. The estimate submitted was £35,000, with a recommendation that the amount be increased to £40,000, to allow for the extension of the scheme to roads which would be formed during the progress of the work. A comprehensive plan was submitted, dealing with the reticulation of the roads, at present under the board’s control, together with the high-pres-sure tower and storage tanks. The engineers reported that in their opinion the shaft at McLaughlin’s Hill had been sunk deep enough; they were now in good water-bearing country, and all that remained was to tap the main source of supply. With this object in view they proposed to commence on cross-tunnels at once. During a test yesterday morning, a continuous flow of 8,000 gallons an hour was maintained, this is considered sufficient to meet the present needs of the district, but when the main supply is struck it is hoped that 16,000 to IS,OOO gallons an hour will be registered.
