At a meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union the chairman, Mr. J. Pinder, expressed resentment at the attitude of the Thames Rugby Union in declining to amalgamate with the Thames Valley Union, on the alleged ground that the latter body had finished last season with a debit balance. This, said Mr. Pennell, was untrue and detrimental to the Thames Valley Union. Mr. D. Kerr said that Thames Valley Union had been fair to all sub-unions and when the parent body was attacked the sub-unions should stand by it. The chairman agreed, and said he was sorry to see such a state of affairs. During the last few seasons the ill-feeling between Thames and Paeroa had been largely broken down and the new development was greatly to be regretted. It was decided to defer further consideration of what action the union should take. TE AROHA The Rugby season opened on Saturday, when Hot Springs defeated City by 6 points to 3. Shortly after Griggs scored in the corner, but the kick was a failure. Quin, toward the end of the game, succeeded in adding the winning points. Beet (Karamu) and Smith (Te Awamutu) were ordered off the field for alleged infringement of the rules. Mr. G. Jeffs was referee. Te Awamutu juniors were too good for Karamu, winning by 22 points to 8. Lenehan opened the score for the winners, scoring a try which Sinclair failed to convert. B. Spiers scored early in the second spell. Jhe Karamu pack was putting in some good work, but lacked combination. Turvey beat the Karamu fullback and scored Te Awamutu’s third try. Scon after half-time Smith scored Karamu’s first try. Almost immediately, Spiers again scored. The Karamu pack swept down-and Morse scored. Wools ton converted. The winners were showing improved form, and Brill crossed, Coyne converting. In the closing stages Lenehan secured and went over. Mr. Poole refereed. At Puahue the Mangahoe juniors played United juniors, and a very keen and even contest resulted in favour of Mangahoe. Brough scored for United, and A. Jackson and Loudon scored for Mangahoe. This game was brimful of interest and though not altogether spectacular was a good, hard tussle. The first quarter saw Kahukura attacking strongly, but Waikite’s defence held good. In the second quarter Waikite scored when Papuni touched down, making the score 5-0. Faulty handling by Waikite’s back division, who endeavoured to force down, resulted in Scott scoring, and Waikite showed they were not yet down, for Sheaf broke away, with Papuni in attendance. They carried play to the quarter flag. From a scrum the ball came out to Morgan, who transferred to Corbett, to Papuni, who scored in the corner. The scores read: 8-8. Hard play continued, but no further score eventuated.

For Kahukura, Scott and Boord shone in the forwards, while Corlett and Thompson were always dangerous in the back division.

For Waikite, Sharpe and Corbet toiled hard, while Sheaf showed signs of a quick return to form. Papuni, Morgan and Basham shone out in the backs.

City, 3, defeated Maniaku, 0. This was a disappointing game, the ball seldon leaving the forward line. No concerted back play eventuated, with the result that the spectators watched a titanic struggle between two very evenly matched packs. Mamaku were unlucky on a couple of occasions, when hard-kicking robbed them of scoring chances. For City, Hinton put in fine line kicks. Parsons (2) and Mathieson worked hard. For Mamaku, Bradshaw, though at times selfish, was a strong defender. All the forwards toiled hard. High School, 20, defeated City, 3, in the junior match on Saturday. High School piled up 17 points in quick time (all in the first quarter). Play then became more even. City scored a try, being their only points, while High School turned a penalty to account. In the other junior grade match Waikite, 12, defeated Kahukura, 3. This turned out to be a first-class exhibition, both sides showing improved combined play. For Waikite Rupe (2), Martin and Corbett scored, while Morgan notched a try for Kahukura. HOCKEY HAURAKI PLAINS The Hauraki Plains Ladies’ Hockey Association’s inter-club competition was continued on Saturday last in showery weather. No scores were secured in a short goals against the Kopuarahi “A” team’s one and Kerepeehi secured the eight goals recorded in the “B” teams game. For Waitakaruru, Miss A. Peters scored twice, Miss E. Jowsey once and Miss M. Beaver once, and for Kopuarahi “A” Miss A. Candy scored once. Mrs. Hira secured five of the eight goals for Kerepeehi and the others were by Miss E. Hegh, Miss N. Fisher and Mrs. W. Kidd. The Ngatea school team had a bye in the competition and played a Paeroa team, winning by three goals to nil. Misses B. Hunter, K. McKerchar and E. Donaghy were the scorers. At a meeting of the Ladies’ Association at Ngatea last week, Mr. C. W. Harris presiding, arrangements were made to promote a series of entertainments throughout the county as a means of raising funds to send a team to Auckland to take part in the Country Week competitions. The Rev. E. R. Alexander was appointed one of the representative selectors, vice Mr. G. L. Griffiths, resigned, and Mr. T. Field, of Kopuarahi, was appointed coach to the team. Arrangements were made to secure an association playing field at Ngatea.

ROTORUA LADIES The annual meeting of the Rotorua Ladies’ Hockey Association was held on May 3. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Mrs. E. Robertson; president, Mrs. D. Steele; vice-presidents, Miss E. Schadick, Mesdames Hunt, Chinn, MacDermott, Messrs. H. W. Beale, Ivirkby, Tisdall, Saraty; hon. secretary, Miss E. Carnachan. There are four teams for local competition: Tuis, Shamrocks, Arawa and Mamaku. Commencing date for competition, Saturday, May 12. Prospects are bright for a good season. WAIUKU GUESTS SHIELD (MEN) Whiri Whiri, 4, beat Kohe Kohe, 0. R. McNamara 2, J. Turner and A. Houghton 1 each, secured the points. Waiau Pa, 4, Glenbrook, 3. FRANKLIN Whiri Whiri, 4, defeated Waiuku, 0. Scorers for Whiri Whiri, Misses M. Brown 3, G. Masters 1. Te Kohanga, 5,, beat Te Toro. Misses Ngapuka 2, McKibbon 2 and Cole-Baker 1 notched the scores for Te Kohanga. SOCCER HUNTLY In the big soccer game here on Saturday Pukemiro United, 8, won comfortably from Wanderers, nil. The former fulfilled expectations by having an easy win in a game that was noted for the goal-kicking of Latimer. This energetic United forward boosted no less than five goals into the net. Alf Black managed two and Bob Dodds one. Play itself was really one-sided and the United team were never seriously troubled. Wanderers’ goalie, Hunter, had a busy afternoon and repeatedlysaved his side. Kennedy played a rattling good game at half and was easily the pick of the losers, while Latimer, Bate, WTiite, Robertson and R. Dodds were in the limelight for the victors. In another game Pukemiro, 6, beat Glen Massey, nil. The former had most of the play throughout, and won comfortably. Huntly defeated Claudelands Rovers by 6 points to 2. The margin should have been greater, for Huntly missed several chances in the first half. The newly-elevated senior team played well and they have the right material, and with a match or two will undoubtedly make a better showing. Their two fullbacks showed that they know how to combine in front of the goal area. Rovers’ custodian was safe, G. Deakon at half being a very promising player, while Kennedy at inside right played a good game. The winners were an even lot, with Hunter the pick of the backs and H. Deakin playing a good game, his brother and P. Davies being about the best of the front quintette. SCHOOL SOCCER Huntly B team journeyed to Rotowaro, but no score was recorded by either side, though Rotowaro were unlucky on the day, and only good goalkeeping by Stirling saved Huntly. Berry and Spence bore the lion’s share of the Rotowaro work and Moyes and Fleming played well for Huntly.

Huntly A team travelled to Pukemiro, Stevens and Bassick putting: one apiece I into the net. but Puke were not to be j denied and before the final whistle had evened matters up, a drawn same resulting.

LEAGUE The League fans rolled out in fair numbers to witness the opening senior match of the season with the elect of Hamilton and it was a close call for Huntly, the whistle blowing with the score S—s in favour of them, and they had the luck, especially in scoring the final three points. For an opening match, however, the form was good and there is no doubt that League is not on the wane in the Waikato. Of the individual players on Saturday who played under Referee Burke, perhaps Jones, Smith and Knight for Huntly were the pick of the backs, and Timms and Huia Mason in the forwards. For Hamilton, Everest played well and Muir was solid in the backs, and in front they were an even lot with none outstandings, JUNIOR Rotowaro tried conclusions with Xgaruawahia on the latter’s ground, the former running out comfortable winners by 29 to nil. Mr. Mitchell refereed. Berry, Devonshire, R. Clout. Smith. W. Hart and Tari spread out the scores. MeCallum converting three. Tari, P. McGallum and Devonshire in front and Bert Smith, G. Berrv and W. Hart, of the rearguard were prominent for good work, while W. Hart's work at half was outstanding. The losers’ play was ragged, and the pack lacked cohesion. Fraser at fiveeighths, was perhaps the best of the rearguard and Parkes the pick of the front rankers. SCHOOL GAMES Ngaruawahia boys paid Huntly a visit on Saturday and opened the Schools’ League competition by trouncing Huntly eo the tune of 25 to nil. Littleton and Molesworth did the scoring and the former and Berryman the kicking. The locals were outplayed from the jump and did not get a look in. Wells. Littleton and Molesworth were best for the visitors, and Brooks, Singer, Lowen and Burke for the losers. Referee, Mr. C. Northmore. FOOTBALL ACCIDENTS A Waiplpi player, D. Gleeson, received a broken collarbone in the Rugby match between Waipipi and Aka Aka on Saturday. In the game against City G. Duncan, the Otaua fullback, received cracked ribs An unfortnate incident occurred on Saturday at the Raetihi Showground during the progress of the Rugby match between two junior teams, when Jim Garvin, of Rangitaua, through getting his leg crossed with another placer, had the misfortune to get it broken below the knee. He was attended by Dr. Feltham, after which he was taken to the Public Hospital. Three Hauraki Plains senior grade Rugby footballers were injured in matches on Saturday last. While playing for Kerepeehi against Ngatea, Mr. Frank Mulgrew, of Kerepeehi, fell heavily and received concussion of the brain, which caused paralysis of his neck and shoulder. He was removed to the residence of Mr. Jas. Costello, nearby, and by earlv evening had recovered sufficiently to be able to proceed home. He was one of the very few players who had not availed themselves of the Rugby Union’s insurance scheme.

Mr. G. Elvin, of Turua, had four ribs broken and Mi\ W. Clarke sprained his ankle while playing against Waitakururu. Both players were insured.
