MAUD ROYDEN ARRIVES

FAMOUS EVANGELIST WOMEN’S WORK IN N.Z. (Special to THE S ) WELLINGTON, To-day. Miss Maud Royden, of London, the famous women evangelist, arrived by the Makura to-day and proceeds South to-night to open her New Zealand lecture campaign at Christchurch. She was sure, she said, that New Zealand women had made good use of their votes. For one thing, only in the saving of infant lives women had used their votes to fine effect, anti now New Zealand had the lowest infant mortality in the world, whereas years ago it was the same as England’s. She was keenly interested in welfare work, she said, and quite recently Dr. Sir truby King visited her chapel at the Guildhouse in London and addressed a large audience of workingclass people. “I want to study women’s work in New Zealand.” she went on. “Women have done great things here with their votes, and I don’t think they’re half swanky enough about it. Dr. Sir Truby King could not have done what he has without the support of the women behind him.” Questioned with regard to immigration, Miss Royden said that it was a pity that the old pioneering spirit was not found among the workers of England to-day. She would like t revived. The Empire was founded by adventurers who didn’t mind leaving home and braving hardships, but now people did not want to face the same risks.
