PATTERSON WINS AT GENOA Davis Cup Contests NEW ZEALANDERS ARRIVE AT LISBON
THE Davis Cup contests (European zone) arc in busy progress. G. Li. Patterson (Australia) showed his top form at Genoa, beating Stefani easily; but Crawford, so ill and weary that often he dropped his racket, lost to De Morpurgo. The New Zealand team has arrived at Lisbon.
(United P.A. — By Telegraph—Copyright, Reed. 10.35 a.m. LONDON, Sunday. In the first round of the Davis Cup (European Zone) at Genoa, De Morpurgo (Italy) defeated Crawford (Australia), 7—5, 6—3, 6—2. Patterson (Australia) defeated Stefani (Italy), 6—l, 6—3, 6—3. Hopman supersedes Crawford in the doubles. A Rome message says 75 minutes sufficed for Crawford’s annihilation. He was obviously a sick man, but he did well in the first set owing to Morpurgo’s mistakes. It was pathetic to see the boy fighting a hopeless battle often dropping his racket from sheer weariness. Morpurgo was steady nearly all the way through. Patterson made Stefani and Morpurgo look like tyros, changing the Genoese ecstasy into open-mouthed surprise. He had Stefani guessing from the jump, with back-bouncing screw shots, chopped volleys and original underhand and backhand crosscourt shots. Patterson did everything as in his palmy days. Stefani was impotent. The New Zealand Davis Cup team has arrived at Lisbon. It plays Portugal in the second round.
